Project Drawdown |
|
Drawdown is a research group who've had the smart idea of analysing and ranking the most viable climate solutions: you can see their rankings here.
Surprisingly, their number one solution is "refrigerant management" (that is, reducing and recycling chemical refrigerants in fridges and air cons): which doesn't sound anywhere near as sexy as planting a trillion trees.
But Drawdown have calculated that, over a period of thirty years, proper refrigerant management could prevent the release of 89.7 gigatons of CO2 into the atmosphere: so, as unsexy a topic as it may seem, we'd better start paying attention to it... |

The Way of All Flesh |
|
An old Adam Curtis doc I stumbled across about the sad, weird and beautiful story of Henrietta Lacks.
If you haven't read the book: Henrietta was an African-American woman who died in agony of cervical cancer in 1951, at the age of 31. She had been treated at John Hopkins Hospital, the only hospital in her area that would see black patients.
After her death, cells taken from her cervix—without her knowledge or consent—became the first immortalised human cell line. Her cells have helped scientists create the first polio vaccine, amongst many other things.
Erased from history for many years (her cells were named simply "HeLa" to disguise their origin), she's now, finally, being recognised for her contribution to science. |
